Stargate Universe

Posted by Heather on June 18, 2008

The talks about a third Stargate series titled, “Stargate Universe” have flying around for well over a year now.  With Atlantis’s continued success and the success of the Stargate movies it’s clear a new series is something to take on.  However, many things have kept the show from going into production, including the production of The Ark Of Truth and Continuum.  The staff would be spread too thin over two films and two different series, which leaves me begging the question now: When will the new series start?  An official date is promised soon, and it will be based on whether or not more Stargate films will be scheduled for next year.  So hopefully we will hear something in the near future.  For more information go to Gateworld.net where they have many different articles on the show itself.  In the meantime Season Five of Atlantis is just around the corner along with the much anticipated release of Continuum.  More stargate in our future is always a pleasant thought for tomorrow.

Terminator 4! Update!

Posted by Heather on May 26, 2008

The rumours of Terminator 4 have been swaying around quite a bit, but only recently do we get some confirmation on the plot.  Forunately it sounds like it’s delving into a more complex plot than T3, but unfortunately it will never be as good as the first two without Cameron on board.  I don’t care what anyone says.  Also, with Christian Bale as John Connor.  I mean come on, that’s just plain good stuff right there.  Anyway, here’s the scoop:

In the highly anticipated new installment of The Terminator film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

The Best Shows On TV

Posted by Heather on April 17, 2008

What is everyone watching right now?  I know there are some great shows that I’ve missed, but there are some of the best shows in the history of television on right now.

House M.D.- Hugh Laurie as House, one of the most disdainful character’s ever on television, is one of the best performances on a television drama I’ve had the pleasure of watching.  The central character’s of the show are just fascinating, though mostly in their relation to House rather than their own lives.  It is probably one of the best written, most clever shows ever.  How they have pulled off Season 4 with the cast thrown in the air is a coup in itself.  You can turn this show on it’s head, get rid of most of the likable character’s, and you become left with the maniacal House, who somehow balances both charisma and mutual taste of dislike for the world in general.  After all, everyone lies.  Relationships are a waste.  On a sidebar, his relationship with Wilson is some of the best chemistry and between two contrasting character’s that somehow manage a relationship one another.  The only better I’ve seen is between Buffy and Spike from Buffy and GKar and Londo on B5.  I love this show.

The Office-What I find most bizarre and simultaneously compelling about this show is it’s ability to render me completely shocked, uncomfortable, and entertained all at once.  The show is so awkward and most of the character’s are so unforgivingly wrong it’s difficult to understand why I love watching it.  The dry sense of humour, yes, but I’m more inclined to believe it’s the trainwreck aspect.  I under no circumstance am willing to turn away.  And I don’t think I’m going to until it becomes Operation Game over for Micheal and the rest of the crew.

Scrubs-Yes, yes, yes, it’s coming to an end, but this show really had something so original and so different than any other show of it’s genre, and it still stands out.  It took two seasons of watching before I completely understood how plain and simply silly it actually is.  I will miss Kelso’s nonsensical one liners, Dr. Coxes rants, J.D.’s daydreams, Turks dancing, The Janitors dead pan glares, Ted’s sweating and high pitched voice, Jordan’s bitching, Elliot’s slap stick comedy, The Todds perversiveness, and even Carla’s voice of reason.  This was one of the best comedy’s of all time.  Though it’s ready, I’m sad to see it go.

Heroes- I feeling like I’ve been hung out to dry on this series, but it’s still one of the best shows on television right now, and though it’s been subject to the writers strike and won’t be picking up again till the fall, I will be loyally waiting to see where they go with the show for Season 3.  Season 2 was a series of ups and downs, but it really had some outstanding episodes of character and future plot development.  This is one of the most promising shows on tv.  I really hope it doesn’t get lost next year.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles-The Best New Show on Television!  I can’t begin to explain my excitement about the brief, though shockingly good first season.  What intrigued me most about TSCC was that it pretty much disregarded the third films attempt to destroy James Cameron’s original mythology behind the storyline.  That plot and storyline easily explained and shoved aside it built it’s character’s, it’s belief system, and it’s own mythology in accordance to James Cameron’s creative genius.  But they weren’t straight copycat’s either.  The show brought new and different conflicts of interest that have made the show it’s own separate entity from the films.  This is amazing stuff.  If Fox cancels it, it’s only further proof that they are morons when it’s comes to television programming.

Stargate Atlantis-It’s nearing Season Five and getting some of it’s best ratings to date.  This spin-off of SG-1 has really managed to encompass the rights and back round from it’s creative forefather, but has emerged as a very different show, with a very different feel and quality from it.  Atlantis has a real focus and drive on the story  being told and utilizes the character’s to tell it instead of the other way around.  This has left some of the character’s less than developed but has made for an extremely entertaining show.  Rodney McKay is possibly one of the most annoying and likable character’s ever.  He is right up there with George Costanza and I adore him.  It’s a really great show that has developed and morphed over the years into a very solid and fun show to watch. I recommend this show to everyone.

Dexter- See I do like shows that aren’t on NBC!  This show is based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter and the first season follows the novella very closely.  The character’s of the show are gripping, and some nearly insane, which is fair considering our main character is a serial killer.  Season 2 had so many twists and conflicts of character’s that really changed the stories feel, and has left me in complete shock wondering where season 3 is going to go.  The possibilities are endless.  At first I found Rita to be one of my least favorite character’s and now she is one of my favorite on the show.  Great writing and great cast.

South Park-As long is there are politics to discuss and celebrities making asses of themselves South Park will never grow old or dull.  This is a timeless show.

Anti-Skynet

Posted by Heather on April 16, 2008

We live in a world full of technology, violence, and the so-called humanity of our race.  Everyday we continue to fight each other and build more things to kill each other with, all in the name of “protecting ourselves”.  Let’s not kid ourselves.  As humans, we are hardly compassionate people.  We are aggressive, territorial creatures that happen to have a higher level of intelligence than anything on this planet which so far has taught us to build bigger and badder ways to kill one another.  Even our ways of entertainment is through violence and gore.  Everything in the world revolves around conflict.  What will eventually bring us down?  God?  If there is one almighty God, he would never need strike his hand down upon man.  An asteriod from space won’t kill us, nor a Super Volcano under yellowstone park.  We have the special talent for being the bringers of our own destiny.  At a very early age I became obsessed with the idea of a post apocalyptic world, and as I grew I began to see the change in our world and the heavy impact technology has had.  Will survival of the fittest soon apply to machines as well?  How far away is the possibility of Skynet?  Here are some fictional interpretations of what may be our very end:

Films like The Terminator, Judgement Day, 12 Monkeys, and The Matrix and Jurassic Park really touch on the exploitation of technology and shows how in their creation it’s damaged, rather than helped us.

Excellent fictional books that explore these same ideals are Prey, State Of Fear, The Lost World, Girlfriend In a Coma, I Am Legend, and The Time Machine.

Those that are preparing for the Apocalypse, perhaps your paranoia is valid.  Either way, these many be fictional interpretations, but the fear behind them is very real.

The Ark Of Truth and Continuum: Stargate Movies

Posted by Heather on April 15, 2008

Yesterday I finally got to see the new Stargate movie, The Ark Of Truth, which went directly to DVD a few weeks ago.  The next movie, Continuum, looks even bigger and better.  I enjoyed the Ark of Truth and it’s closure on the Tenth and final season of SG-1, but Continuum brings back two of the greatest conflicting Protangonists and Antagonists ever on the history of the show: General Jack O’Neill and Ba’al.  I don’t know how prevelant O’Neill’s character will be in the script, but either way I’m glad Richard Dean Anderson will be in it.  This is going to be old school SG-1 style and though I like the newer character’s and storyline, you can’t really compare one to the other.  The first five-six seasons of the show were just outstanding, end of discussion.  July isn’t so far away.  Go to Gate World to keep posted on every detail available in the Stargate Universe. I, for one, hope these moives keep getting made. Now, after seeing The Ark Of Truth, I cannot wait for July.

Here is the Premise for The Ark Of Truth: SG-1 travels to the Ori home galaxy in search of an Ancient device that could stop the Ori war once and for all. But the return of an old enemy threatens to overrun the ship before they can accomplish their mission.

Go to Gate World for Spoilers and other cool info, but honestly you should just go out and purchase or rent this one.

Here is the Premise for Continuum: After Teal’c and Vala vanish, the team realizes that the timeline has been altered and the Stargate program no longer exists. A fleet of Goa’uld motherships arrives to invade Earth, led by Baal.

There are plenty of Spoilers on Gate World in you desire finding out everything before you see the movie!

Farscape-Episode 2 (Exodus From Genesis)

Posted by Heather on April 14, 2008

I’m starting to feel the fun.  Things are definitely falling more into place now.  The character’s are finally starting to feel more natural around each other, and I’m getting used to the outrageous alien gear and creatures, though each new one is a shocker nonetheless.  These things in a Sci-Fi-verse are easier to stomach than otherwise.  On to Exodus!

Show Synopsis

After hiding from Peace Keepers in some strange atmospheric glow, Moya is boarded by large insectesque creatures.  They have infested the ship, taken blood samples of it’s crew, and is increasinngly raising the level of heat on the ship.  Here a weakness among the Peace Keepers is revealed as Aeryn begins to suffer “heat delirium”, a potentially leathal illness that drives it’s victims into a vegetable state, while the brain is still mentally coherant.  While trying to aid Aeryn the crew discovers another problem.  The creatures are somehow making replica’s of the crew and now with the heat even more unbearable, the scout troup of Peace Keepers they barely avoided earlier has landed on the ship and is ready to shoot to kill.

My Reflections

The shows do continue to get better as they come.  They rely on plotline, dialouge, and creativity rather than action and CGI fun, which makes it more of a character story than Sci-Fi action like Battlestar Galactica. (which I adore).  Some of the character’s have already made huge turns and changes, yet it doesn’t seemed forced or unnatural.  Their universe is infinite in it’s mystery, and as a viewer I really feel I’m along for the journey with John Critchon, learning as we go.

This was a really good episode as far as original thinking and creativity went.  Some predictable elements were involved, but in general it was very good.

The Point

I still deem this one of the more unusual shows I’ve ever seen, and each episode it continues to further my first notion that it is completely bizarre.  But so far, that’s a compliment.
